After months and months and months (and months) of working on it, the books are here and we're having a party! TOMORROW!!
I've moved almost my entire office into Rocker & Junkii's guest room and am stickering the hell out of everything that's going in the swag bags (which are actually boxes).CEOT Book Launch Feb 13th, 7pm-9pm at East African Restaurant in Ottawa, sponsored by Beau's All Natural Brewery. RSVP please!
We're driving all over town delivering restaurant letters (the letters to restaurants saying "congratulations you're in a kickin' new restaurant guide. Here's a poster. Put it up.")
We're contacting the stores that have carried the book in the past, but haven't placed any orders yet, to remind them that the book will be "released" on Feb 14th.
We're talking to media and trying to build some buzz... I spoke with Ron Eade from the Citizen last week, I'm on CKCU on Wednesday morning at 8am, another interviewer is coming to the launch, sent a review copy into CHUO and yesterday I visited with Gay Cook who writes the food column in the Citizen .
Oh, and this is for M.Tinto, we are driving a big-ass SUV. Photos coming, but you can start the teasing now.
That makes me want to fall in love?
Perhaps it's the nip in the air that has me reaching for warmer, cuddlier clothing. I'm not talking the immobilized-in-a-parka clothes, but the ones that just cover you up enough so that your skin occasionally gets kissed by the crisp air and pulling them closer feels like you're pulling into a hug.
Perhaps it's the rush of newness. Change is in the air here in fall. New politics rolling on the hill.
New students rushing into all the universities, hormones rippling in the air. The thrill of the unknown, new trouble to get into, new adventures everywhere.
Perhaps it's the tickling of senses. Crisp apples in the air of the market. Every tree a bouquet as their leaves slip or snap into their fall colours. The bright blue of a cool fall sky. The rustle and crunch of leaves underfoot. The warm glow that engulfs your entire body after you come inside from a surprise fall rain.
Perhaps it's the nights. Evening walks along the canal as the sun sets and the wind whips the trees about. The stars popping out in the night sky. A warm hand slipping in to warm my cold fingers. The shooting stars. The the Northern Lights igniting the sky. The perfect setting for romance.
Perhaps it's that every time I've fallen in love, it's been in Ottawa in the fall.
It seems like August is the month to run into family unexpectedly in Ottawa. (Remember last year's surprise encounter with my Aunt from Holland at a play in the park? )
This time, I surprised my cousin Kath & her husband by getting on the bus they were riding.
"What are you doing here?" Kath demanded, treating me as if I hadn't been in Ottawa for months. I was off to meet one of the CEOT team for a drink (which I desperately needed after this pizza-oven-of-a-week).
I guess Kath didn't get my email entitled "Lex is in town". We got to catch up for all of 2 bus stops before they had to rush off for an appointment.
Me? I went two more stops. Met Robyn for drinks, a brief camera swap and much over-sharing. Then to the ESD for dinner. Followed by more drinks with Rockr & Junkii. Then we remembered the new offering at House of Georgie's - Gravy Pizza...more on THAT later.
So remember, if it's August and you're in Ottawa, keep an eye out. You never know what relative you'll run into. You can always go for drinks afterwards.

My friend's have the coolest ideas!!!![]()
andrea from the fish bowl has started a fascinating experiment in human behaviour. She calls it The Trust Experiment.
She is taking an old wallet inserting a $10 bill and, after coordinating with the manager of her favourite local coffeeshop (Bridgehead for those of you reading from Ottawa), is leaving it on table with the following note inside:
Hello –
You have just stumbled upon the Trust Experiment.
I have put ten dollars in this wallet. It was deliberately left here on [date]. I will be checking it once a day to see if it’s still here. At the end of the experiment the money will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Obviously, this experiment ends if the wallet or the money disappears. It might last a day or a month. I have no idea, but that’s what I’d like to find out.
If you’re reading this, please sign the bottom of this sheet to let me know when you were here. Although you are not required to do so you may add money to the wallet, but you must first accept the risk that comes with leaving cold hard cash out in the open. The question is: do you trust?
This experiment is being tracked at www.quietfish.com/notebook.
Sincerely,
andrea t.
Westboro
Now some of the more cynical of you may think this is silly or that this is a waste of time.
andrea's response to your cynicism? "I would like to say, for the record, that I don’t really care. I’m doing this for myself and for myself only. And I thought it might be cool to take a few other people (like you!) along for the ride and write about it here."
There's been a fair bit of discussion already happening on andrea's blog about the project, people's inherent good-ness or bad-ness and by extension trustworthiness, and because of me a little chat about the broke and hungry.
I'm eager to see how it all pans out.
What would you do if you found a wallet left on a coffeeshop table?
Winter is finally here and Ottawa is about to start it's Winterlude celebrations. If you've never been in Ottawa for Winterlude it's a great time to visit, skate the canal (which I'm told will be open and frozen early February) and enjoy the cold.
But for those of you who want to celebrate by sipping wine and perusing a menu, Taste of Winterlude is the event for you. It starts tonight - January 19th, and runs until February 1, 2007. Each restaurant is offering a prix fixe dinner menus of $20, $30 or $45 per person. The menus include appetizer or soup or salad, entrée and dessert, and reservations are advisable.
Over on the CheapEats Ottawa blog (CEOTblog.com), we've broken the list of participating restaurants into 4 categories:
- Almost CheapEats ($20 Prix Fixe)
- Not So CheapEats ($30 Prix Fixe)
- Splurge ($45 Prix Fixe), and
- Indecisive - the restaurants who didn't have their prix fixe menu pulled together in time to promote it.
Right-y-right then, multimedia. Here are a couple of my Junkii inspired videos:
This second one is taken at Shafali Indian Bazaar in the Byward Market building, where their Chicken Tikka Wrap is made from a fresh naan straight out of the tandoor wrapped around Chicken Tikka, shredded lettuce and heaven sauce. They don't call it that... but I do.
Third you may already have seen, it's the Tiny Tom's donut machine at the CNE popping out little bits of donuty goodness. At the end of the process the hot tasty rings are scooped up into a small bag sprinkled with sugar or cinamon sugar and shaken until they are coated. There are days when I think the movie Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle should have been Lex & Ger Go To Tiny Tom's.
And finally, last night's dinner. (Yes I do eat dinner too). We went to Jadeland in Ottawa's Chinatown for the Taro-Stuffed Duck. This little addition to my YouTube account is a video of Junkii artfully pouring on the sauce for even distribution of all the flavourful goodness... and goodness it was! I have certainly dined well this trip thanks to the CheapEats Ottawa team!!
Sunday may be your day of rest, but it's my day of meals and meetings. So meet my weekend lunches:
BTW - a couple of people had blogged about my No One Cares What You Had for Lunch series... So I guess somebody cares. Specifically Venus @ The Handbasket, Holly @ Holly Babble and Excruciating Minutiae!
The panini was quite good - sliced ham, provolone, mango chutney and grilled pinapple on a rosemary foccaccia.
But that blue cherry?!?!? They must have a colour blind dietician.
In an odd twist of cross-city pollination, I was sitting in an Ottawa coffee shop catching up on Photojunkie's "My Toronto Includes..." when into the coffee shop walks a man who looks vaguely familiar. I look down and there he is on my screen - Graham Powell. [photo by Rannie Turingan]
I don't know Graham. To the best of my knowledge I've never seen him before. I'm sure he doesn't know me. But there he is, simultaneously on my screen and ordering a Venti Soy Latte.
So I walked up and introduced myself and handed him a copy of CheapEats Ottawa. I mean, the man's gotta eat, right?
