What's the story behind a time when you got locked out?
We were in Banff staying at the Banff Springs Hotel. I woke up early and saw that there was a little fire escape balcony right beside our bedroom. So I left Ger in bed, snagged the room key and snuck out to see the view from the balcony. As I stepped out onto the cold metal straps of the fire escape, the door snapped shut behind me. It snapped shut and locked.
While our bedroom window was right beside the fire escape, I couldn't reach it.
"No worries", I thought, "I'll just slip down a floor and go in that door. Then I'll sneak up the stairs to my floor and crawl into bed with Gerry to warm up my feet". Warming up my feet was important because I was barefoot on a metal fire escape and it was only mid-April. Oh, and I was dressed in a stylish oversized tee-shirt and not much else.
The door on the next floor was locked too. So my next plan of attack was to get the attention of the Japanese tourists piling into a bus in front of the building. I got their attention - they turned their cameras on me, chuckling and clicking. Then they all loaded onto their bus and drove away.
15 minutes more of standing on tip toe looking into the tiny little window to see if there was anyone in the hall and obsessively checking the door until I finally saw a concierge. I pounded and pounded on the door until he came and opened the door for me.
I crawled into bed beside Gerry, he woke up, rolled over and asked if I wanted to go check out that cool little balcony we'd seen the night before.
Ger did a GREAT job making this and I love the results so far - check them out on flickr..
We're already talking about Lightbox 2.0 for bigger items and shots and I haven't even had it for 12 hours yet. I am lored!
A wonderful gift, so precious and sweet.

But I have to say, my favourite of 2006 is: (quite possibly because I'm the one that convinced him to be so close to the end of that dock when the waves hit.)
Wondering where I've been for the last week and a half? Pissed that we missed your holiday soiree? Really don't care what's been going on but hoping I'll get to the point soon?
Okay, here's the scoop. We've been sick - feverish, stuck in bed, horking up a lung, getting behind in work, weak as kittens - sick. It started a week ago Monday, when Gerry came home. He crawled in bed and stayed there until Thursday. While he lounged in bed, I spent the early part of the week locked in the office with boxes of receipts celebrating Taxmas. As I delivered everything to our accountant and started clearing my desk, I noticed a little sniffle. I was doomed.
Today, I'm finally able to raise my head
unaided and posted the miracle cure over on In The
Kitchen. It's my friend Diane's recipe for Rum Toddy.
Diane is a chef and the Food & Beverage Manager at Saint John's Imperial
Theatre. She's knows what's what when it comes to rum.
If you've never tried a Rum Toddy, it is the nectar of the gods and the cure for all that ails you! It certainly cured me.
It's so easy to whip up a detailed life history of the annoying cashier who jams household cleaner on top of your lettuce. To succinctly outline all the parental influences & progressions of damage that has made them the surly beasts they are today.
So why is it that when it comes to writing a short bio for yourself it takes 2 full days of hair pulling, calling in favours and pepto-swilling?
Attempts to start included:
- Lex - foodie, blogger, x-geek, cheapeater...
- All the influences in her life conspired to make Lex a foodie...
- Lex was raised in a market...
- From bunching beans to dining with dignitaries...
- All her earliest memories involve food...
- Lex started working in the food industry at the age of 5...
- Lex's first pet Rosemary the lamb... also very tasty.
- Food, it's all about exploration...
- Lex's culinary adventures started early one Sunday morning...
I did eventually succeed in getting a bio crafted, and I'll tell you why and where it is once it gets posted.
My thanks to Gerry, M.Tinto, Creampuff & Cyb for all their help getting this done.
"Presents I'll remember forever"
In general, my favourite-est gifts have come as packages in the mail, completely as a surprise, from one of the many wonderful people in my world:
The
first piece of mail I ever remember getting was a package from Montreal
my father sent me while he was away on course. It was a small box
filled with popcorn, and buried in the popcorn was a copy of Le Petit Prince and a pair of sunglasses. - Now, Gerry has taken to sending me care packages when I'm on the road. He fills them with lovely little treats, distractions, stuff to help me take care of myself, help me cope and to remind me of how much I am loved.
But I'd have to say my best gifts ever are:
